Nova 2010: real time 3D for all

The NOVA Studio interface has been completely reworked for more simplicity and intuitivity. You can now change textures on the fly, select colors with a dynamic chromatic wheel, visualize the lights and cameras in the scene while duplicating them, moving them, creating them on the fly, changing the focal distance, capturing screenshots of the scene in preset formats, or restoring the position of a camera. The improvements in Design mode means that it is now possible to directly design a scene from scratch in Nova Studio. Nova 2010 also offers new 3D import formats, namely FBX, DXF, OBJ and 3DS in addition to DAE and X formats. NOVA 2010 also manages the customized importers in the form of plugins.

An interactive 3D engine in full DirectX 10

NOVA 2010's move to DirectX 10 allows support of 4.0 shaders, which improves visual performance and quality while allowing access to new graphic options. The use of the 4.0 shaders brings more speed to shadows, particles and bones, and allows the use of high-resolution textures. Nevertheless, NOVA 2010 preserves full compatibility with DirectX 9.

In terms of performance and compatibility, Nova 2010 uses DirectX 10 and DirectX 9 for the Nova Web Player. It brings full support for 64-bit systems with a unified installer for all Nova versions as well as support for 3ds Max 2011 and Revit 2011. It also includes a Nova Web Player extension for IE, Firefox, Opera, Safari and Chrome. Vertice have also implemented a new version of their Vortex Physics engine in NOVA 2010. It has support for multithreading, a new system for detecting interactions between physical and animated objects, a new more stable collision algorithm and support for gravitational and repulsive fields of attraction.

The important improvements in NOVA 2010 from a graphics point of view are:

  • Vertice has fully redesigned the real time shadows engine to bring more precision and simplicity in the settings.
  • The shadow engine is also more powerful and adds support for real soft shadows.
  • New post-process effects: blur, motion blur, depth of field.
  • Ambient Occlusion: gives more realism to scenes using a system of attenuation of lights and shadows.

NOVA 2010 also offers other new functionality that needs to be underlined:

  • The multi-touch mode, for use not only on multi-touch touchscreens but also on the Microsoft Surface Table.
  • Compatibility with NVIDIA 3D Vision stereoscopy technology, which allows you to visualize scenes in 3D.
  • You can now display a scene simultaneously across several screens (horizontal split, vertical split, stereoscopy, multi-cameras).
  • The possibility to define webcams as sources of textures.

NOVA 2010 offers the following functionality:

  • Multiple Formats
    Nova natively supports many formats such as FBX, Collada, DXF, OBJ, 3DS, X and can be extended to import or export specific formats. An exclusive "Delta File" mechanism enables you to keep your Nova parameter settings after you have modified your model.

  • Integration in 3ds Max
    Graphic designers can continue to use the market leader in 3D packages for modelling and animation, and benefit from the integrated Nova exporter. It will help you to create anything from simple to very sophisticated scenes.

  • Integration in Revit
    Architects benefit from a well integrated Nova assistant, which automatically determines the best the options for your project.

  • Intuitive Use
    An ergonomic customizable user interface is at your disposal, regardless of whether you are a beginner or an advanced user. Nova manages many peripherals such as joysticks, multi-touch screens, Table Surface or various types of VR helmet.

  • Integrated Editor
    Nova comes with an integrated editor that allows you to be productive without leaving the Nova interface. You can create scenes from scratch, import objects, create materials and lights, actions, animations, and much more.

  • Interactivity
    The addition of interactivity is an easy task thanks to the preset actions in the "Action Builder". They allow a graphic designer to be entirely autonomous in the realization of their scenes.

  • Top Performance
    Thanks to its many optimizations and tested algorithms (manual or automatic LOD, domains, octrees, multi-CPU and multi-core, fusion...), the rendering of your scenes is optimized by default and can be controlled precisely.

  • Visual & Sound Effects
    Nova offers a broad range of effects such as soft dynamic shadows, ambient occlusion, video / webcam textures, 3D sound, flares, post-processing, particles, glow, fog, reflections, refractions, transparency, bump mapping, and much more.

  • Streaming
    Among its many options for publishing, Nova can also generate your scenes in a streaming format. You can thus start to navigate before (down)loading of the scene has completed. Nova creates a cache of the scenes in order to not have to download them again.

  • DirectX & Shaders
    Nova gives you the option of using either DirectX 9 or DirectX 10. A full CPU renderer is also available. Nova lets you exploit the power of shaders by letting you create, edit and integrate them.

  • Web & Multi-Users
    You can publish your scenes on the Web either via a multi-browser compatible plugin managing a cache of the scenes or via Server rendering with Nova Server for unequaled compatibility and loading time.

  • Publish without Installation
    The visualization of scenes can be done through simple executable files or via server rendering with Nova Server, in both cases without installation. You can also generate high-res images and videos.

  • 32 and 64 bits
    The Nova core and the Nova tools are available in 32-bit and 64-bit versions. This means that you can benefit from the wide possibilities of the 64-bit architecture, such as creating scenes of very large size.

  • Plugins
    Nova can be extended very easily thanks to the creation of dedicated plugins. A clear and rich API means that you can also adapt Nova to fit your specific needs.

  • Stereoscopy
    For a better immersion into your scenes, Nova supports anaglyphic stereoscopy via a shader, NVidias 3D Vision solution as well as supporting a number of VR helmets.

  • Physics
    In addition to the collision engine, Nova also offers you a complete physical engine for simulating the physical behavior of objects (falls, slides, rebounds...)

  • Scripting
    You can extend your interactions via an advanced scripting model based on the .NET platform. For more simplicity, a script editor is directly integrated into Nova.

  • Multi-Display
    With Nova, you can now render on several screens horizontally or vertically and navigate more freely in your scenes. Nova can also utilise multi-touch touchscreens.

Auch wenn viele dieser Nova Features für den "normalen" User zum Teil sehr technisch klingen mögen, die Handhabung der Software ist es nicht. Nova ist in jeder Beziehung "Artist friendly". Es richtet sich nicht in erster Linie an Programmierer oder Techniker, sondern den Nutzer von 3dsmax. Den Architekten, Künstler, Messebauer, Designer, Maschinenbauer und die vielen andere Berufsgruppen, die ihre Arbeit möglichst einfach, schnell und sicher interaktiv und in realtime präsentieren möchten.
