Rhino User Webinar: Small is Big

Rhino User Webinar
Small is Big
24 April 2024 at 4:00 pm (CEST)

During the Vienna Architecture Conference in 1992, a round table discussion took place at the MAK Austrian Museum of Applied Arts. The participants included renowned architects such as Wolf Prix, Zaha Hadid, Eric Moss, Lebbeus Woods, Thom Mayne, Steven Holl, and Carme Pinos. Some of these architects expressed frustration over the limited scale of their projects and the marginalization of their role in comparison to commercial enterprises. However, despite these challenges, many of these architects went on to become influential figures in the field and successful entrepreneurs. What is crucial to acknowledge is the pioneering role these architects played during that period of small-scale projects. It was during this time that they embarked on experimental endeavors, laying the foundation for their future business success. Additionally, these projects also played a significant role in the development of computational and parametric architecture. At External Reference, we recognize the importance of interior spaces as small, private projects that were once the subject of frustration among architects like Wolf Prix at MAK. Today, we understand that these projects served as experimental laboratories, leading to the remarkable growth and development of the architects who participated in the Vienna Architecture Conference in '92. At External Reference, we prioritize research and innovation, working on a diverse range of projects, including waterfront development and museums. We acknowledge that interior spaces, which were once considered small and insignificant, have now emerged as crucial laboratories for exploring cultural, political, and environmental agendas in the contemporary condition.
About the speaker:
  • Carmelo Zappulla, Italian-born architect (1978), is founder and managing director of the Barcelona-based architecture studio External Reference, which develops international work at different scales: exhibition spaces, architecture, urban, interior and product design.

Rhino User Webinar: New Rhino 8 features applied to jewelry - by Riccardo Pietro Visentin (in italian)

Rhino User Webinar
New Rhino 8 features applied to jewelry
8 May 2024, 16:00 (CEST)

This webinar focuses on new features in Rhino 8 that are changing the way jewelry is designed. These features cover both design in the narrow sense and the visualization and presentation of designs.

For design in the narrow sense, concrete examples of application and method strategies will be shown, including the targeted use of SubD and Grasshopper for the useful creation of model variants.
Special focus will be given to the use of the new PushPull command, associated with the new Gumball features, to quickly manage the insertion spaces of gems, serial elements, and engraved and embossed text.
It will be shown how the new features, if well applied, enable faster work, an increasingly important and fundamental aspect.

For design visualization and presentation, the focus will be on creating eye-catching previews to generate images and short animations for functional communication with clients.

Riccardo Pietro Visentin is a Creative Digital Designer: consultant, 3d designer and trainer for digital innovation in multiple areas of design. He has developed specific expertise in the design of jewelry, eyewear and fashion accessories.
Specifically in the area of jewelry design, he has been active in the field for over 40 years and has created training and consulting paths to introduce and improve digital design and fabrication in companies in the jewelry supply chain.
He is the Founder & Owner of AUREASERVICE Design Studio (Est. 1989), which has been an Authorized Rhino Training Center since 2005

AA DLAB 2024

In its 19th year, DLAB is a two-week program taking place at the AA London HQ’s unique atmosphere.

DLAB experiments with the integration of advanced computational design, analysis, and large-scale prototyping techniques. The program builds on its expertise in complex architectural design and fabrication processes, relying heavily on materiality and performance. DLAB brings together a range of experts—tutors and lecturers—from internationally acclaimed academic institutions and practices, Architectural Association, and Zaha Hadid Architects, amongst others.

The research generated at DLAB has been published in international media—ArchDaily, Archinect, Bustler—and peer-reviewed conference papers, including SimAUD (Simulation in Architecture and Urban Design), eCAADe (Education and Research in Computer Aided Architectural Design in Europe).

DLAB investigates the correlations between form, material, and structure through the rigorous implementation of computational methods for design, analysis, and fabrication, coupled with analog modes of physical experimentation and prototype making. Each program cycle devises custom-made architectural processes by creating novel associations between conventional and contemporary design and fabrication techniques. The research culminates in the design and fabrication of a one-to-one scale prototype realized by using robotic fabrication techniques, intending to integrate form-finding, material computation, and structural performance.
